KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Thamel, the touristic hub of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, has its own quirky charm. On one side of the street, branded clothes are on display at a shopping center. On the other side, people are sipping cold beverages in the midafternoon sun.




KATHMANDU, NEPAL – “What had my little son and myself done that my husband brought home a second wife?” asks a frail-looking Janaki Adhikari.


Her eyes well up with tears.


“Yes, I then divorced him and raised my son on my own,” she says. “He is now 15 years old.”

KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Even before official work hours commence at 9 a.m., people flood the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, police offices and embassies in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital. KATHMANDU NEPAL – “The sound of the Indian jet plane taking off enveloped me, and I felt the rattling vibrations creep up to my feet,” says Anusha Udas, 22. “As I watched the jet plane ascend in the clear, blue sky with a kind of speed that I had never witnessed before, I knew I was destined to fly. My heart started beating faster, and that for me was the sign – a dream I had to follow.”

 



KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Hari Bahadur Nepali, 50, is busy helping his wife, Radha, to fetch water from the tap in their two-story house in Kapan, a village in Nepal's Kathmandu district.

 

But this is not just any tap.

 

The water comes from a metal pipe attached to a machine that extracts water from underground. Nepali says that the process, called water boring, has enabled his family of 10 to attain water despite a persistent nationwide shortage.

 



KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Radha Karki decided last year to pull her two children out of their government school in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital.


Although the cost puts tremendous financial pressure on her and her husband, she decided it was worth it to enroll them in private school. Her 5-year-old daughter, Safalta, now studies in kindergarten, and her 9-year-old son, Safal, is in first grade at Sneha Secondary English School.
