KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Sujan Satar wakes up at the crack of dawn from his open bed on the pavement of a city sidewalk in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, to the sounds of horns and vehicles. Today is his 15th birthday.




BUNGOMA, KENYA – Mary Nafula is just 4 years old. She is lying on a slender cot in the children’s ward at Bokoli Sub-District Hospital. Today is the first day she has been able to speak since being incapacitated by a high fever and body aches. The emaciated girl has survived this bout of malaria, which the attending nurse says nearly killed her.

 



KATHMANDU, NEPAL – Shila is 6 years old. She weighs less than 20 pounds.

 

Her mother, Bishnu Pariyar, 29, of the western Nepali district of Gorkha, says Shila can hardly walk and cannot sit down on her own. She is bony. Her face is wrinkled. Her hair is thin and unkempt.

 



NUWAKOT, NEPAL -- Sapana Balami is wearing a blue frock. Her long hair is tied back with a rubber band. The lanky 14-year-old girl looks pale and worn-out. She says it feels strange to carry a bulky backpack at the same time she carries a child in her belly.




 

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – On the days when her grandmother, Rose “Agogo” Banda, 70, is not able to sell sand, Elinate Banda, 13, takes her antiretroviral medication on an empty stomach.

 

Banda says she loves school, but she has never been able to attend regularly. Sometimes she cannot go when her uniform is too dirty because they have no soap. Other times, she is in the hospital.

 



NAIROBI, KENYA – Tracy Anyango, 4, recites her ABCs as she nibbles on potato crisps. She coughs occasionally, but covers her mouth at her mother’s instruction. Her runny nose attracts flies and she swats them away.

 



SRINAGAR, KASHMIR – Sameer Ahmad, 14, sits and longingly stares toward the gate. He is still waiting for someone to come and take him home.  

Ahmad was put into the Yateem Foundation, one Kashmir’s 17 orphanages, after his father passed away in 1994 and his mother remarried a few years later.
