SRINAGAR, KASHMIR, INDIA – Kulsum Dilawar, 16, stands up nervously before sitting back down on the edge of her bed, her eyes gazing down at the floor. Wearing a simple outfit and a printed scarf covering her hair, she flips through the pages of her notebook.

 

“Can we talk outside?” she mutters.

 



KATHMANDU, NEPAL – “What had my little son and myself done that my husband brought home a second wife?” asks a frail-looking Janaki Adhikari.


Her eyes well up with tears.


“Yes, I then divorced him and raised my son on my own,” she says. “He is now 15 years old.”

CAIRO, EGYPT – Sally Ali, 19, traveled 100 kilometers from her hometown to Cairo, Egypt’s capital, to celebrate Egyptian Women’s Day last month.

 

“It is a special day,” she says. “We wanted to celebrate it – it is our day. But how can we celebrate while Samira is crying?”  

 



BAMENDA, CAMEROON ­– Sarah Ngalla, 56, is a primary school teacher in Bamenda, the capital of Cameroon’s Northwest region. The mother of three children, Ngalla says that she was never interested in politics until a regional civil society organization, Community Initiative for Sustainable Development, started its campaign in 2010 for more women to run for office in this year’s elections.

 



CAIRO, EGYPT – On the streets of Cairo, Egypt’s capital, citizen opinion varies on the Egyptian government’s December 2011 raid of mostly U.S. nongovernmental organizations.

 

Many Egyptians say they support the crackdown on these organizations. Saber Naieem, 37, an accountant in Cairo, says he agrees with the stand the Egyptian authorities are taking.
