I can hardly believe another year is ending -- 2009 was a record year for The Press Institute! Even in the midst of an economic downturn, we trained more than 100 women in developing countries through our global training sites, news desks and partner programs. Press Institute-trained reporters tackled stories of AIDS, poverty, injustice and politics from Nepal to Nigeria. Each article produced showcased the power of ethical, responsible journalism.
Our mission to empower individuals, build stronger communities and elevate global awareness has never been more fully realized. We could not have done it without you!
Economic Empowerment for Emerging Journalists
Since 2006, we have witnessed almost 150 women lift themselves from poverty or abuse by using journalism, education and employment as the building blocks for a new life. Women like Anju from Nepal, have seized the opportunity to
provoke social change and mindfulness, speak for the silenced, and earn strong living wages from a dignified profession.
Additionally, more than 500 people have participated in our community development companion programs, such as adult literacy and computer skills training, and more than one million people around the world read our news content regularly.
Sustained Growth for The Press Institute:
Where Journalism and Social Entrepreneurship Meet
2010 is filled with exciting, new initiatives that will increase our coverage and impact.
* Our largest Global Training Site kicks off in Kenya simultaneously with our first income generating project that will provide long-term program sustainability that does not rely on granting trends.
* The Climate Wire© will bring you top notch multi-media environmental reporting from six nations.
* Our Newsroom Training Program will launch in Mongolia, providing professional, ethical news training for professional news sources at home and abroad.
* Our newest partnership with Global Girl Media, Kick It Up! will train teenage girls from the slums of South Africa to cover the World Cup with print, radio and broadcast coverage.
* And, we will launch a new website and Global News Portal to bring you more news from around the world!
I invite you to continue with me on this journey. With your support, The Press Institute will continue to:
Produce ethical, investigative journalism from the world's darkest corners!
