The Liberia News Desk was established during summer 2011 in Monrovia, the capital. Located in West Africa on the Atlantic Coast, Liberia was first settled by freed slaves from the United States in 1822 and established as a republic in 1847. Its security situation remains fragile after civil war spanning more than a decade just ended in 2003.
