Mexico News Desk

Mexico News Desk

The Mexico News Desk is located in San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state. Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world, yet Chiapas is also home to a large indigenous population. Although Mexico is considered an upper-middle-income country, poverty is widespread. In recent years, immigration and the drug war have become hot topics. In 2011 GPI also added reporters in Zacatecas and Mexico City.

The Mexico News Desk is where the first five GPI reporters were trained in 2006. Six reporters now gather news there, covering topics such as abortion, education, health care, indigenous rights and the criminal justice system.
