The Nepal News Desk is located in Kathmandu, Nepal's capital and largest city. Nepal, a landlocked country located north of India, was a monarchy until 2008, when it became a democratic republic. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world. It has high rates of malnutrition and communicable diseases, and lifestyle-related noncommunicable diseases are on the rise. Although Nepal was the first country in Asia to rule in favor of same-sex marriage, LGBT rights are not widespread and discrimination also persists in its caste system.
The Nepal News Desk, established in 2007, is GPI's regional hub for South Asia. In addition to being home to eight of the world's 10 tallest mountains, Nepal is also home to eight GPI reporters who work with three editors and translators to tackle issues such as caste-based discrimination, LGBT rights, sex-selective abortion, children's rights, sex trafficking, food shortages and the decline of traditional livelihoods. In 2011, GPI will begin establishing rural news desks in partnership with READ Nepal.
