I am Fozia Yasin.
I was born and brought up in Indian Kashmir. I was born on June 1, 1983 and the armed uprising in Kashmir broke in 1989. So, you may call me a ‘child of conflict,’ as I actually grew up amidst the turmoil.
And why I chose to be journalist? I have always believed that journalism is an empowering profession, particularly for women. It enables you to give a voice to the voiceless, and work toward a positive change.
While in the conflict area, I observed that the stories related to development take a back seat. And I want to to bring forth such stories by talking about the other side of the breaking news.
I came to Delhi in pursuit of stories beyond conflict.
Issues related to women, conflict/peace and development remain close to my heart.
As someone has said, “Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, ‘She doesn't have what it takes.’ They will say, ‘Women don't have what it takes.’”
I keep reminding myself of that.
